Topic:

Robert C. Gardner, Department of History and Philosophy, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT, worked on his dissertation, “Technological Forests: Engineering Nature with Tree Planting on the Great Plains, 1870-1942,” while at Grey Towers this year. His work centers on Gifford Pinchot’s belief that the USFS could not only learn to regenerate logged over areas but could also develop scientific methods for creating forests wherever society desired them.

Testimonial:

“My time at Grey Towers was wonderful. The staff there was fantastic. Being welcomed into the Pinchot home and writing in the tower room was an almost surreal privilege and an academic thrill.”
